    Joe Silvera is a popular teacher and I came very close to attending a weekend intensive at his old studio before he and his wife opened their new facility in Berkeley Although I have been soldering for some time, I was really looking forward to reading this book, because my sense of Joe s communication style is that it is very direct and down to earth.I wasn t disappointed there s a lot of good info in this book, from tool recommendations to some basic metalsmithing And I really liked the section that walks the reader through a heat management practice process designed to help understand how and where the torch applies and maintains heat The projects are well documented, with lots of good photos, and for the most part the directions are clear and specific The tool and equipment section is especially thorough, and I appreciated the discussion of flame types and applications in the context of small home use butane torches.There are two reasons I ve given this book four stars instead of five First, I found that some of the instructions could have used a little clarity, maybe even in the form of additional photos For example, throughout the book, Joe recommends using color as a means of determining the heat of the material, but for a lot of people the difference between light red and pink which he uses a lot might be too nuanced Second, the projects are very silver centric and the instructions presume that silver will be the primary material for al...
