    When reading Pickthall s stories, one has to bear in mind that she s a poet So, the writing is often somewhat indirect, she doesn t usually drive straight at you There s always something else going on below the surface, below the beautiful language and below the surface is where the power and the passion resides Once I found the rhythm of her work I felt comfortable with her style and found several of the stories quite enjoyable There are a couple of recurring themes, including loyalty and a sense of personal obligation Her tales are set mostly in remote, hostile settings where an individual is driven to the utmost limits of physical or emotional endurance miniature versions of Jack London We seldom encounter a struggle between good and evil but rather the story is often driven by a conflict of values.Some of the stories in this volume e.g The worker in Sandalwood have been pu...
