I had hoped that this book was going to be full of stories, salacious, humorous and true, from a madam s tenure keeping a brothel in Nevada It had very little that was salacious or humorous from a madam s tenure keeping a brothel in Nevada It had very little that was salacious or humorous Instead, it was a memoir of a woman who had previously been in management in casinos being employed to up the game of a brothel that a friend of hers had bought There are three major themes to the book Firstly, the madam She is wonderful, she is fantastic, she has brilliant ideas, she can make people a lot of money, she can change perceptions of brothels and prostitutes sorry, ladies , always ladies , everything she does is a success, if it isn t,it was because of other people and not her We know this because she endlessly drums on about her amazing abilities both in casinos and brothels and later, a strange sort of resort a hotel in the middle of nowhere with a brothel on the premises UK v US traits view spoiler It is very much an American trait to talk of one s accomplishments and big oneself up It is embodied in the Whitney Houston s song, The Greatest Love of All which is about loving oneself It s very, very much not a British trait This is best illustrated with tv quiz shows where American contestants applaud themselves and jump in the air British ones do now as well, on some shows, but awkwardly It is very much a British trait to say, when getting praise, or being asked to talk about themselves, to deprecate themselves, it was nothing really, a lucky guess Different styles, one not better than the other So I wondered if I was being too hard on the author because I m not an American, even though I now live half my time in the US hide spoiler The second theme was the business itself of running a brothel This covered upgrading the premises, putting rules in place extremely restrictive to keep the prostitutes from drinking too much, taking drugs, smuggling things in, stealing from the brothel etc to the extent they had to conduct shakedowns as in prisons as soon as a john left before the whore could hide the money or drugs in their mattresses or wherever else they thought they could get away with it And she calls them ladies It also detailed the ways, mostly tours but also some laudable charitable donations an ambulance for example in which she said she had made the brothel an accepted, respected and valued part of the local community I have doubts myself whether that many people really thought of whorehouses as a good place for their daughters to make a career, despite earning as much as a doctor without having to pay for the training , or thought that was a great place for their wealthy fathers, sons and husbands to drop thousands of dollars every night You didn t get much service for under 2K a party.Part of the business angle was how to defeat the constant attempts at scamming the brothel by the prostitutes, the admin staff, the bartenders, the kitchen staff, everyone really The author boasts though about how she scammed customers into thinking they were drinking very fine wines by decanting screw top bottle wines into Waterford crystal decanters I sense some hypocrisy here Thirdly were the ladies themselves On the one hand she is praising them as beautiful with fabulous figures, lovely hair, wonderful women dedicated to their career with an ability to negotiate thousands of dollars out of their tricks before even touching them Then on the other hand, she is writing that there were microphones in every room to listen in to the negotiations that took place before sex so the house could be sure they would get their 50% of whatever the ladies, all independent contractors not employed by the house, negotiated She didn t trust the wonderful ladies at all And with good reason. They were an awful bunch by and large no matter how much the author says they were just like everyone else with pets and children and day to day problems But they aren t Most of us are not on drugs, do not regard men as tricks to get money from, do not think that sex is just a commercial operation and can screw however many men will pay us in a day, do not have our children taken away from us and put into care and do not think of ways of scamming our employers Most of us also do not have husbands or boyfriends who think it is a great thing to have their partner earn money by disappearing for at least two weeks at a time to a brothel she is locked into, allowed out only 4 hours a week.I think that a better ghost writer and better editor could have elicitedinteresting stories from the madam and also curtailed the endless boasting of how great she was The writing is prosaic at best, and downright cliched, my mind was racing with all sorts of thoughts, but then it dawned on me quite often It s a three star book, as it is interesting, but a two star one in many ways as it doesn t have enough detail, doesn t live up to it s title and the author might be the beloved mom of the ladies but I couldn t feel any affection for her at all. There is another style of brothel keeping, and it made its madam a much loved major celebrity and household name in the UK, if you haven t heard of Cynthia Payne, Google her _____________After reading West End Girls The Real Lives, Loves and Friendships of 1940s Soho and its Working Girls, which is superb, a 10 star read, I reduced the rating for this book to two star, they just aren t even in the same league

I picked this book up at our local museum as it just looked interesting I found it to be a real page turner Hard to put down Having lived in Las Vegas for nearly 40 years what goes on at local brothels is still pretty much a mystery to me.After reading this book I now feel I know muchabout the business and when tourists ask me questions about the brothels I ll have some answers for them.Very entertaining and I highly recommend it.
