A Short Story On Growing Up In Dixie During The 60s, And Perhaps A Peak Into The Southern Psyche From The Upcoming Collection Hillbillies Prefer Blondes, Debuting In The Late Fall Of This Year From The Book S Introduction This Book Is A Pack Of Half Truths, Tall Tales, And Outright Lies Or, In Other Words, Fiction I Will Admit Right Up Front That I Am Flat Out Not Interested In Telling The Truth, But I Am Dedicated To Telling A Good Yarn, And If Some Kind Of Truth Comes Out Of That, All The Better If You Have To Ask, Is This Real Or Made Up You Should Probably Stop Right Here And Go Back To Reading Garfield And The Back Of Spam Cans I Am Not A Memoirist, A Journalist, Or A Diarist I Make No Bones About Wanting To Hide Behind The Curtain Of Fiction Sure, Some Of This Kinda Sorta Happened To Me, Some Of It Happened To Folks I Knew, But All Of It Is Edited, Filtered, And Gussied Up To Create The Best STORIES I Possibly Can I Am Telling Tales Of A Way Of Life That, For Good Or Bad, Is Rapidly Fading From The American Landscape Not Rapidly Enough For Some, I Know I Make No Excuses For Attempting To Chronicle It As Best I Can If I Have To Exaggerate, Extrapolate And Jury Rig To Do That, So Be It Telling Tall Tales Is An Intrinsic Part Of The Fabric Of Southern Life, And I Do Not Apologize For Continuing That Tradition While I Greatly Admire The Work Of Southern Writers Mary Karr And Rick Bragg, I Do Not Have The Need To Write The Soul Bearing, Gut Wrenching Auto Bio Stuff They Do I Admire Them Too Much To Imagine That My Bland Life Or My Middlin Prose Could Compete With Theirs Any Similarities Between Their Writing And My Own Is Largely Due To Mere Geography And A Common Time Frame I Will Admit To Swiping The Fine Term Hork From Ms Karr As The Saying Goes, If You Are Going To Steal, Make Sure You Take From The Best Finally, I Feel That I Should Warn You That, While The Few That Know My Work Think Of Me As A Humorist, Not All Of These Stories Are In That Vein In Fact, Some Of Them Are Downright Grim But If You Re One Of Those Folks That Skips The Intro And Jumps Right Into The Stories, I Reckon You Ll Figure It Out For Yourself But You Can T Say Later That I Didn T Try To Warn You.
