This book was a disappointment I loved the cover As a writer, I m told covers are important, and part of what sucked me in was the art work on the cover I loved the title I grew up in West Newport, so I couldn t wait to read P.S Foley s take on surfers and football at my alma mater, Newport Harbor High School I admit that my expectations were probably too high Still, what I do know as a reader is this I was bugged from beginning to end I couldn t get a fix on the time period Early 70s This book was a disappointment I loved the cover As a writer, I m told covers are important, and part of what sucked me in was the art work on the cover I loved the title I grew up in West Newport, so I couldn t wait to read P.S Foley s take on surfers and football at my alma mater, Newport Harbor High School I admit that my expectations were probably too high Still, what I do know as a reader is this I was bugged from beginning to end I couldn t get a fix on the time period Early 70s or late A number of details in this regard were off What yacht club was the writer referring to Newport Harbor or the Balboa Bay Club which isn t a yacht club If you re going to set your book in Newport, then get your names right Don t call it the Newport Balboa Club That s just confusing and irritating There were also all the escapades of underaged drinking at well known establishments What yacht club or restaurant is going to risk its liquor license by serving 17 year olds That may have gone on in Isla Vista Goleta in the early 70s, but not in Newport On my 19th birthday, I was thrown out of Sid s Blue Beet for taking a sip of my date s beer So why not give this book one star and be done with it It s total male fantasy It s also very philosophical, telling me how the characters feel rather than showing me It s just not my type of book, but who knows, it might appeal to others
