A fantastic story where everything is backwards e.g animals hunting humans Could promote some great discussions about what the children get from the images

I m in two minds about who this book is for One of Flying Eye s first ventures into publishing for children, this is a series of largely unrelated scenes in which a rather carnivalesque approach is taken to the story Starting with the classic, rotating head to find two faces image to that of a baby in a high chair feeding its mother, there as many western, cultural allusions than there are animals and extraordinary scenes It refers to itself as a book for young and old but I m not sure it was I m in two minds about who this book is for One of Flying Eye s first ventures into publishing for children, this is a series of largely unrelated scenes in which a rather carnivalesque approach is taken to the story Starting with the classic, rotating head to find two faces image to that of a baby in a high chair feeding its mother, there as many western, cultural allusions than there are animals and extraordinary scenes It refers to itself as a book for young and old but I m not sure it was put together for the former audience in mind I can t quite put my finger on why this might be but a part of it might be related to the fact that there is no clear story of any kind The illustrations themselves, I like very much and Atak German illustrator, Hans Georg Barber paints some funny scenes with polar animals placed in the jungle and vice versa A particularly favourite scene is that of the rabbit shooting the hunter and the dinosaurs in a museum looking at relics of humans Children will probably enjoy finding the Mickeyesque Mouse on each of the pages the common thread alongside the theme and certainly my three year old enjoyed it, laughing at the baby feeding his mother An interesting one

Masquerading as a children s picture book, Atak has given the world yet another perfect piece of critical commentary Depicting images of rabbits shooting hunters, lions keeping humans, dinosaurs observing ancient human skeletons, and , Atak subverts images that have become everyday in order to show their grotesqueness and perversion I obsessively poured over Topsy Turvy World looking at every tiny detail of brilliance.

Although this is classed as a Childrens Picture Book, I personally do not think this would really be appropriate for children Maybe the older ones would understand the humour as I did certainly find the illustrations all rather amusing but younger children would just be confused and maybe even slightly scared by some of the scenes shown.

Such a refreshingly different book and illustration style The illustrations are fine art really Very interesting paintings with something of the art brut about them I d be interested to see what my upper primary boys think of the book I suspect they d find it intriguing and in places hilarious As for me I just feel weirdly mesmerised by it.
