Let me begin by saying that I am a contributor to this collection one poem With that disclaimer this is one of the best front to back collections of anthologised poems that I have ever read regional temporal or otherwise That said the fact that it is a collection entirely made up of works by Louisiana poets resident expatriate or itinerant attests to the deep vein of talent running through the alluvial soil of the Pelican State The poems in this book are inherently tied to themes of place history family and the uniue environment of our coastal and delta geography with a particular focus as noted in the editor William Wright's foreward on the pervasive presence of water the Gulf its estuaries rivers streams and floods Every serious poet currently writing in the state is represented including Julie Kane the current state poet laureate Darrell Bourue the last state poet laureate Jack Bedell editor of Louisiana Literature Press Catharine Savage Brosman and Peter Cooley to name a few The book also includes poems by award winning playwright novelist and short fiction writer John Biguenet and acclaimed singer songwriter Zachary Richard The collection also includes three poems from Pulitzer Prize winner and Bogalusa Louisiana native Yusef Komunyakaa among which is an excerpt from his haunting Reuiem concerning the aftermath of the recent oil spill in 2009 and hurricanes in 2005 Finally and perhaps most tellingly the book showcases a myriad of lesser known but immensely talented Louisiana writers whose works embody the state's rich heritage and its organic effect on those who have called Louisiana home At the same time the poems all transcend their Louisiana roots and stand alone as works that embody the traditional poetic concepts of rhythm strong imagery and language that transcends its syntax If you live or have ever spent time in Louisiana this collection is an essential addition to your library And even if you have never been to the state this collection of poems exhibits some of the best contemporary American poets writing about universal themes of home family and place I would recommend this book to anyone who loves Louisiana and anyone who enjoys serious thoughtful well crafted poems
